Encoding<>Decoding
By Ziv Frenkel
Steps that we have already taken, steps that we are taking now - they will be part of our memory tomorrow. The process of remembering is the focus of Ziv Frenkel's choreography 'Encoding><Decoding'. Frenkel understands remembering as encoding, the retrieval of memory as decoding. The act of walking becomes the starting point of the choreography and translates remembering into a physical process. The steps symbolize the eternal movement forward towards a future that is inconceivable without the past, the previous steps. Walking becomes a cycle. The Israeli-born dancer Ziv Frenkel creates a resonance space in an intense, personal confrontation with a concise part of Jewish culture: the symbol of the circle and the weekly remembrance and processing that can be found in the ritual of lighting the candle for Shabbat. This durational performance thus becomes a meditative place that you can enter and leave according to your own feelings.
'Encoding><Decoding' was developed as part of the film installation '1001 Lights' by Mouvement Perpétuel Montréal, which was presented as a guest performance by steptext dance project in 2021.
